Kilchoman Batch Strength: A Festive Punch in a Glass

The Kilchoman Batch Strength is a testament to the distillery's innovative yet grounded approach to whisky-making. Bottled at 57% ABV, it’s just shy of cask strength but still packs an impressive punch. The whisky uses barley peated to 50ppm, the same level as Ardbeg, but what sets Kilchoman apart is its lighter, fruitier profile. Unlike the earthy, medicinal peat found in some Islay whiskies, Kilchoman's peat leans more towards a gentle smokiness, creating a balance that enhances rather than overwhelms the other flavors.

This release is matured in a mix of bourbon barrels, Oloroso sherry butts, and re-charred red wine casks—a combination that could be risky. Personally, I’ve often found red wine casks can introduce an unpleasant dryness to whisky, but Kilchoman makes it work. The wine influence integrates beautifully, adding depth and a subtle fruitiness without detracting from the whisky's bold character.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: On the nose, waves of clean, ashy smoke are layered with a vibrant mix of grapefruit zest, ripe cherries, and a whisper of that islay saltiness I have come to love. As it opens up, there’s a hint of coastal brine and warm spices that add intrigue.

  • Palate: The first sip is an explosion of flavor—spicy caramel & toasted oak. The peat smoke is prominent but refined, more like a soft campfire than an earthy bog. The bourbon casks contribute creamy vanilla and honey, while the sherry influence adds a touch of dried fruit and spiciness.

  • Finish: Long and warming, the finish is reminiscent of a sweet malva pudding enjoyed around the embers of a braai. Sweet, smoky honey lingers on the palate, interwoven with subtle notes of clove and dried orange peel, leaving a satisfyingly smooth aftertaste.

The Kilchoman Batch Strength is unapologetically bold yet carefully balanced, offering a unique interplay of smoky, spicy, and sweet elements. For me, it stands out as a quintessential festive dram, and its decadent flavor makes it a perfect choice for Christmas celebrations.
